Private Military Schools

Private military schools are just one choice when it comes to military school for girls. Learn about private military schools vs. a public or charter military school. Keep reading for a list of the top private military schools available.

A private military school for girls is a school with an explicit military focus that is privately, rather than publicly funded and has places for young women on its campus. Although some people still think so, it is not a haven for troubled teens or a place to help undisciplined students or those with an attention deficit disorder learn to focus. Rather, most private military schools are rigorous academic institutions that aim to train civic leaders and soldiers in the skill and qualities they will need to serve their country. They do this with a combination of demanding coursework and military discipline.

At one time in United States history, women did not serve in the armed forces. As a result, there was no need for private military schools for girls. As the role that women play in all branches of the military has increased, a number of private military schools co-ed opportunities have arisen.

Most of the private military schools that accept girls include grades usually classified as middle school or junior high and high school. A few accept students only at the high school level. Some offer a post-graduate year. Schools committed to a military education may have other affiliations or focuses as well. For example, some private military schools consider themselves preparatory schools and some are associated with a particular Christian denomination.  In fact, military prep schools  is used synonymously with private military schools by many people.

Culver Academies seems to be a unique school in this group. Although it does accept young women now, they are in a separate school that does not have the word military in its name. They receive leadership training, but do not seem to provide specifically military training for young women. For this reason, it is not included in the following chart.

As you review private military schools for girls, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Some sites that provide a list of private military schools for potential students and their parents incorrectly identify some boys-only schools as being co-ed. Check for yourself on the school website or contact the school directly. This way, you won’t include schools in your list that aren’t actually available choices.
  • Private military schools are not particularly good about collecting the basic facts about their programs and putting them all in one place on their website for easy viewing. Some carefully lay out their history and mission and philosophy; others don’t. If you need to know basic information that will influence your decision, you may actually find it faster to contact the school and ask and/or get their information packet sent to you, rather than searching around their website.
